4. GENERAL INFORMATION
4-1. San José
San José
is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica, it is the economic, political,
and cultural center of the country. It is situated in the Central Valley and has
the following nearby towns: Alajuela, Cartago, and Heredia. San José was founded in 1738, at the beginning of the
westward expansion from Cartago. As a result of the independence from Spain in
1821, it became the center of the country's liberal element and in 1823, the
capital.
San José
is a modern city with many parks and fine public buildings, including the National
Theater, which has a mixture of Spanish and North American architecture, as
well as numerous houses setback to have lawns and gardens fronting the street.
San José is a stop for international airlines, the hub of the highway system, the
national distribution point for imports and the center of the Pacific and
Caribbean railroads.
The city
is filled with cultural offerings including several unique museums. Downtown
San José has a collection of plazas commemorating the country’s progressive and
democratic traditions—notably the Democracy, Culture, and Social Guarantees
plazas. Several collections of pre-Columbian gold work and binational cultural centers
are among the attractions in the city.
